Lexapro is an antidepressant. Its' medicinal compound, Escitalopram, belongs to the group of drugs known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors [SSRIs]. When the neurotransmitter, Serotonin, gets reattached to its' parent nerve in the brain, it results in a chemical imbalance. • Priapism;


• Ringing sound in the ears;


• Severe fatigue.

Some of the following drugs/substances are amongst those with which this medicine interacts:-

• SNRIs such as Duloxetine, Desvenlafaxine, or Sibutramine.


• Antihistamines like Tylenol PM, or Midol PM.


• Tryptan/Tyrptophan [amino acid].


• Aspirin.


• NSAIDs such as Celebrex, Advil, Toradol, or Naproxen.

• Anticoagulants such as Warfarin.

• Alcohol.


• St. John's Wort [herbal medicine].

This medicine is contraindicated if taken with the following:-

• Other SSRIs such as Citalopram, Celexa, Luvox, Prozac, or Zoloft.


• MAOIs such as Phenelzine, Selegiline, or Rasagline.


• Antipsychotics like Clozapine, Pimozide, or Thioridazine.


• Anti-seizure medications such as Ultracet.


• Medicines for treating Bipolar Disorder like Lithium.

The medicine is prescribed according to the condition for which it is being given and its' severity. It is a once-a-day dose, but the dosage pattern is different for adults, and children - to whom it is given only for treating MDD.

It is recommended that you take the medicine at fixed hours in the morning, or evening, so that you can take it at the right time each day. It can be taken with water, regardless of food.

• Inform your treating doctor of your complete medical history - whether you have any disease of the heart, liver, kidney, suffer from a metabolic disorder, have seizures, bleeding from the stomach or bowels, dehydration, alcohol or drug abuse, low sodium levels, or will be soon going in for ECT. Inform your treating doctor of any specific allergies you have, particularly to anything in Lexapro.


• Pregnant, or lactating women, as well as those planning to have a child must consult their doctor before beginning this therapy.


• Elderly people, and people who drive or perform risky activities, must be very careful and alert as this medicine can make them drowsy.


• If this medicine is taken with other SSRIs, MAOIs, antipsychotic/anti-seizure/anti-obesity medicines, triptans for migraine, lithium, sedatives, diuretics, alcohol, or herbal products [St. John's Wort], it can cause a fatal condition, called the Serotonin Syndrome.


• Avoid alcohol/alcoholic beverages, and caffeine-containing beverages/foodstuff while taking this medication.


• If surgery is required, let your dentist/surgeon know that you are taking this medicine.


• There should be a gap of 2 weeks between an MAOI and this medicine.


• Do not take Lexapro longer/in greater amounts than prescribed. Similarly, don't stop taking the medicine suddenly, without your doctor's consent, or you may suffer withdrawal effects.
