What is Biltricide?
Biltricide [Generic] is used for treating parasitic infections like Schistosoma, Clonorchiasis, or Opisthorchiasis. It is an oral medicine.
The active ingredient in this medicine, Praziquantel, is an anthelmintic - a drug that is used to kill and dispel worms that enter through the skin when people swim or work in infected waters, or eat fish that has been poorly cooked and carries these worms.
The medicine causes spasms in the helmintics [worms], paralyzing them, and causing them to perish slowly. However, it is more effective against the adult flukes, than the younger schistosomes. Even when the worms don't die, they get immobilized by the effect of the medicine, and are expelled from the body along-with the waste matter.

Uses of Biltricide
The medicine gives relief from infections caused by flukes, or schistosomes, such as:-
Schistosoma, also called Bilharzia, which occurs when people get infected by the schistosoma eggs when they bathe, swim, wash clothes, practice irrigation or fish in waters that are contaminated with the schistosoma trematodes.
Clonorchiasis, or Chinese liver fluke disease, is an infection that is caused due to intake of freshwater fish - which may be raw, smoked, salted, or dried - that contains the fluke larvae.
Opisthorchiasis, also known as the Siberian fluke disease or Cat liver fluke disease, occurs when people consume raw, pickled or poorly cooked fish, which contains the fluke larvae.
If these infections are not treated in time, the infection can become chronic and have a serious impact on other organs in the body.

How to use Biltricide?
Treatment of these infections with
Biltricide is generally for 1 or 2 days.
Take the medicine as prescribed by the physician; the dose depends upon the infection and the body weight. The tablets must not be chewed as the medicine has a bitter taste but swallowed with a glassful of water. Keeping even a small part of the tablet in the mouth may result in gagging, or vomiting.
Biltricide is not recommended for use in children below 4; for treating children with such an infection, you must consult a pediatrician.
-
Side effects of Biltricide
The medicine is well-tolerated with mild side effects; but these side effects may be due to the infection itself, especially if the worm burden is heavy. These can include:-
- Headache

Precaution of biltricide
- Before beginning treatment, inform the treating doctor about all the ailments you've suffered from, especially if you have any ailment of the heart or liver, an enlarged spleen, a parasitic brain infection, seizures, or if you have ocular cysticerocosis.
- Give a complete list of all the medicines [including prescription and OTC]-nutritional supplements-herbal products you are taking, so that the doctor can tell you which ones you should not take with Biltricide.
- Should you be taking therapy for any other medical condition, it is recommended that you do not take Biltricide.
- Do not have grapefruit juice with Biltricide, as the juice can make it harder for the body to assimilate the medicine properly, thus reducing its effectiveness.
- Pregnant women should take this medication only if the doctor tells them to do so.
- Lactating women should not nurse their babies on the day they take Biltricide, and for the next 72 hours.
- As this medicine may cause drowsiness or dizziness, elderly people are at greater risk, and those who drive or perform risky tasks, while taking this medicine, should try to remain very alert, or take a day off.
- Boil water for at least a minute before drinking it. Water needed for bathing should also be heated for 5 minutes at 150oF.
Do not begin, increase, decrease, or stop the medicine on your own. Do not share your medicine with others even if they have the same symptoms as you, for it can harm them.
