Mebeverine (Colospa) an antimuscarinic, belongs to a group of compounds known as musculotropic antispasmodics, which aid in relaxing the smooth muscle in the gut by its direct action on it, preventing nerve signals going to the intestine muscles which causes the gut muscle to relax, preventing painful muscle spasm(s).
Colospa (Mebeverine) provides relief from:
diarrhoea/constipation, which are associated with irritable bowel syndrome.
abdominal pain
bloating, wind
cramps

Uses
Colospa is used in case of primary irritable colon due to:
alternating constipation and diarrhoea
postprandial distension
persistent diarrhoea
abdominal pain
Secondary irritable colon due to organic lesions (like regional enteritis, diverticulitis, specific and non-specific inflammatory conditions of the GI tract).
Mebeverine, also an inhibitor of calcium-depot replenishment, and has a dual mode of action which normalizes the small bowel motility.

How to use
Contact your paediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children.
Colospa (Mebeverine) is recommended to be taken before a meal.
Take colospa medication exactly as prescribed by your health care professional.
Do not chew the medicine.

Side effects
If you notice any of the symptoms listed below or any other symptoms which seem severe/persistent contact your doctor immediately.
agitation
skin rash
confusion
constipation
itching/hives
difficulty breathing
tightness in the chest
swelling of the face/lips/mouth/tongue

Interaction
Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the formulation of this medication or any other medication in any other form.
Inform your doctor about any other medication you may be taking in any other form.

Overdose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Notes
Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had failure of part of the gut causing an obstruction known as paralytic ileus.
Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had any inherited blood diseases which can cause a variety of symptoms, such as mental health problems (porphyrias).
Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had if you have been constipated for more than a week.
Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had if you have any allergy to sugars.

Missed Dose
Do not double doses to make up for a missed dose. Consult your health care professional about your missed dose.

Colospa (Mebeverine) may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Storage
Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

Precaution
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to conceive.
If you conceive whilst on a course with this medication inform your doctor immediately.
If you need to undergo any kind of surgery, inform your doctor you are taking this medicine.
